Jiuyanqiao and Chengdu's Riverside Bar Streets

Chengdu has a reputation in China for being the city that knows how to enjoy itself, and its nightlife reflects that. Two districts do most of the work: Jiuyanqiao on the Jinjiang river, and the Lan Kwai Fong complex on the Binjiang riverside, both a short taxi ride from the centre.

Jiuyanqiao
The Nine-Eyed Bridge area along the Jinjiang is the older and more local of the two. A stretch of the riverbank is lined with bars, terraces and small live music venues, and the bridges and riverfront are lit at night. The crowd is mixed: students, office workers and older residents sitting out with beer and snacks. Several places have outdoor seating under the trees overlooking the water, which is where you want to be from April to October.

Lan Kwai Fong and the riverside clubs
Further south along the river, the Lan Kwai Fong development brought a cluster of cocktail bars, clubs and restaurants with a polished, late-night feel. Expect door staff, minimum spends in the bigger clubs and a younger, dressier crowd. It is louder, more commercial and open later than Jiuyanqiao, and it is where the city's electronic music nights happen.

What to drink
Beer is the default and comes in large bottles; local Sichuan brews are light and cheap. Craft beer bars have multiplied in the last decade and now serve IPAs and wheat beers brewed in Chengdu. Cocktail bars range from serious to sweet-and-colourful, and there are several places specialising in baijiu cocktails, which are worth trying once for the flavour of the local spirit. Fruit wines and Sichuan plum wine are the gentler option.

Practical notes
Bars open late and close between 1 and 3 a.m. depending on the venue. Bring ID, expect airport-style checks at the larger clubs, and note that the most popular places charge entry or require a table booking on weekends. Taxis queue on the main roads nearby, and ride-hailing works well after midnight. Late-night food is easy: hotpot restaurants in the same districts stay open long after the bars close.
