Chengdu's music scene is the most interesting in western China and one of the more distinctive in the country. It grew out of the Yulin district in the south of the city, a dense neighbourhood of small streets, bars and restaurants, and it has always been more about songwriting than spectacle.
Little Bar and its influence
Little Bar, in Yulin, opened in the 1990s as a small venue for bands that had nowhere else to play and became the centre of the city's independent scene. Generations of Sichuan musicians started there, and the folk-revival wave that made Chengdu famous nationally in the 2010s passed through its stage. It still runs live music most nights, in a room that holds a few hundred people, with tickets that cost less than a cinema seat. A larger sister venue handles bigger touring acts.
What you will hear
The local sound tends toward folk, acoustic singer-songwriters, indie rock and, increasingly, hip hop and electronic music. Lyrics are almost always in Mandarin or Sichuan dialect, which means the songs reward atmosphere rather than comprehension, though the melodies are direct. Sets usually run an hour, doors open around eight, and the headline act comes on at nine or later. Between sets, the audience drinks, smokes and talks, and the whole evening is informal.
The wider scene
Beyond Little Bar there are a number of live houses and music bars across the city, with clusters in Yulin, around the university districts and in the newer entertainment areas. Some bars host open mic nights and acoustic sets where anyone can play, and there is a strong amateur culture of university bands. Venue listings are mostly in Chinese and circulated through social media, so it helps to ask at a record shop or a hostel for what is on during your stay.
Practical notes
Tickets are usually bought at the door or through Chinese ticketing apps, and prices are low - often the equivalent of a couple of drinks. Venues are small, so arrive early for a good position, and expect smoking indoors. The Yulin district is easily reached by metro, and the area around the venue has enough late-night food to make a full evening of it. Note that some venues close on Mondays and Tuesdays.
