Muni Valley: Waterfalls and Travertine Pools Near Songpan

Muni Valley lies in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang prefecture of northern Sichuan, on the high plateau around Songpan, and it is usually treated as a quieter alternative to Jiuzhaigou a few hours away. The name covers two distinct scenic areas within the same reserve: Zhaga Waterfall, where a river drops through a narrow limestone gorge, and Erdaohai, a valley of terraced travertine pools fed by mineral springs. Both sit above three thousand metres, in a landscape of conifer forest, meadow and Tibetan villages.

Zhaga Waterfall
The waterfall is the largest of its kind in the region, a wide curtain of water falling into a stone basin in a heavily shaded gorge. The walk in follows a boardwalk and stone steps along the stream, past smaller cascades and pools, with the vegetation growing denser as the gorge narrows. The air is permanently damp, moss covers everything, and the temperature drops noticeably as you approach the fall. In spring melt the volume is at its greatest; in winter the fall partly freezes into columns of ice.

Erdaohai and the travertine terraces
The second valley is a gentler walk around a series of shallow pools formed where mineral-rich water has deposited calcium carbonate into stepped dams. The colours come from the mineral content and the algae: turquoise and green in the deeper pools, yellow and ochre where the water runs thin over the terraces. Boardwalks cross the edges of the pools and climb to a small temple above them, which gives the best view of the whole terrace system at once. Water levels vary a great deal with the season, and the pools are at their most photogenic after the summer rains.

Practical notes
The drive from Chengdu takes seven to eight hours, so Muni Valley is normally visited as part of a northern Sichuan loop with Songpan and Jiuzhaigou rather than a day trip; it is reachable by air to the regional airport plus a road transfer. Altitude above three thousand metres means the walk is slower than the distance suggests, and altitude sickness is possible for the unprepared. Bring rain gear, sun protection and warm layers, since the weather turns fast. Facilities on site are basic and signage is in Chinese.
