Huanglong National Park

Huanglong means Yellow Dragon, named for the long ridge of golden travertine that runs down the valley and, from a distance, resembles a dragon's back. The terraces are formed by calcium carbonate dissolved in the spring water, which precipitates as it cools and pools behind natural dams. The process is continuous, so the landscape is still changing.

The scenery
The main valley walk climbs past a sequence of pool groups, each with a different character: the Welcoming Pool at the entrance, the Bonsai Pool with its small sculpted travertine shapes, the Five-Colored Pool with its bands of turquoise and emerald, and finally the Multi-Colored Pool near the top, which is the largest and the photograph everyone comes for. Beyond the pools the valley opens onto meadows and the snow peaks of the Minshan range, at around 3,500 meters.

The walk
The classic route is a one-way climb of about 3.5 kilometers along boardwalks through the pool terraces, then a descent on a separate path or by cable car. Walking the whole thing takes three to four hours at altitude. The boardwalks protect the travertine, so staying on them is not optional.

Practical notes
Huanglong is about eight hours by road from Chengdu or a short flight, and it is normally visited on the same trip as Jiuzhaigou, roughly two hours away. Altitude is the main consideration: above 3,200 meters some visitors feel breathless, so walk slowly, drink water, and do not rush the climb. The best colors come in autumn, and the park is snowbound and largely closed in winter.
