Itinerary

Day 1Chengdu: People's Park, Kuanzhai Alleys and Teahouse Life

Morning - People's Park and a teahouse
Chengdu is a city that sits down. Begin in People's Park, laid out in 1911, where the paths are full of mahjong tables, ear cleaners working with long steel picks, and the Heming Teahouse, serving covered-cup tea in bamboo chairs since 1923. You take a seat, order a cup, and watch the city do nothing in particular for an hour - which is the point.

Late morning - Kuanzhai Xiangzi
Walk to Kuanzhai Xiangzi, the Wide and Narrow Alleys: three parallel Qing-dynasty lanes restored in 2008 and now lined with courtyard houses, teahouses and small workshops. Your guide reads the architecture - the gateways, the screen walls, the depth of the courtyards - and explains how a Qing official's residence differs from a merchant's.

Lunch
A courtyard restaurant serving Sichuan home cooking.

Afternoon - Shaded streets and a riverside pause
Continue on foot through the older residential streets west of the centre, past small temples and wet markets, and finish with tea or a cold drink beside the Jinjiang river.

Day 2Chengdu: Wangjiang Tower Park, the Jinjiang River and Anshun Bridge

Morning - Wangjiang Tower Park
Wangjiang Tower was rebuilt in 1889 on a bluff above the Jinjiang river, on the site where the Tang poet Xue Tao is said to have made her paper. The park around it holds one of the densest collections of bamboo in the city - more than a hundred varieties - and in the morning it is full of people practising taiji and singing opera in the pavilions.

Late morning - The river bank
Follow the Jinjiang downstream on foot. Chengdu's old city was ringed and watered by this river, and the rebuilt banks are now a continuous park of walkways, bridges and tea stalls. Your guide explains the 2,300-year-old irrigation system upstream at Dujiangyan that still feeds the plain, and how it shaped the city.

Lunch
Noodles or a set Sichuan lunch on the way.

Afternoon - Anshun Bridge and the old quarter
Finish at the covered Anshun Bridge and the lanes around it, where Chengdu's traders once loaded goods onto the river. The afternoon ends with tea or a cold drink, and you are free to stay for the evening lights along the water.
