A private walking day following the Jinjiang river, the water that has shaped Chengdu since the Dujiangyan system was built upstream. It starts among the bamboo of Wangjiang Tower Park, rebuilt in 1889 on the bluff where the Tang poet Xue Tao is said to have made paper, and ends at the covered Anshun Bridge. Flat walking, roughly five kilometres.
Morning - Wangjiang Tower Park
Wangjiang Tower was rebuilt in 1889 on a bluff above the Jinjiang river, on the site where the Tang poet Xue Tao is said to have made her paper. The park around it holds one of the densest collections of bamboo in the city - more than a hundred varieties - and in the morning it is full of people practising taiji and singing opera in the pavilions.
Late morning - The river bank
Follow the Jinjiang downstream on foot. Chengdu's old city was ringed and watered by this river, and the rebuilt banks are now a continuous park of walkways, bridges and tea stalls. Your guide explains the 2,300-year-old irrigation system upstream at Dujiangyan that still feeds the plain, and how it shaped the city.
Lunch
Noodles or a set Sichuan lunch on the way.
Afternoon - Anshun Bridge and the old quarter
Finish at the covered Anshun Bridge and the lanes around it, where Chengdu's traders once loaded goods onto the river. The afternoon ends with tea or a cold drink, and you are free to stay for the evening lights along the water.
