A hands-on Sichuan cooking day in Chengdu for anyone who has eaten the food and wants to reproduce it. You shop the market first, cook three dishes over a wok with a teacher beside you, eat what you have made for lunch, and leave with printed English recipe cards. Classes run in English and suit complete beginners.
Morning - Market shopping
Cooking starts with shopping. At a neighbourhood market you choose the vegetables, tofu, pork and dried spices for the class, and your teacher explains what to look for: which peppercorns still smell of citrus when crushed, how to tell fresh tofu from a tub that has been sitting, and why a Sichuan kitchen keeps at least three kinds of chilli.
Late morning - The class
In a teaching kitchen you cook three dishes that carry the whole cuisine. Mapo tofu teaches the combination of fermented bean paste, chilli oil and ground peppercorn that gives Sichuan food its numbing heat. Kung pao chicken is the sweet-sour-salt balance in a single wok. Dan dan noodles is about the topping and the sauce rather than the noodle. Each dish is cooked by you, at a wok, with the teacher correcting as you go.
Lunch
You eat what you have cooked, with rice and a light soup.
Afternoon - Tea and the written recipes
The afternoon is quiet: a tea session covering the main Chinese tea families, and a printed recipe card for each dish with the ingredient weights, in English, so the dishes work in your own kitchen.
Evening - Free, with suggestions
Your guide returns you to the hotel with a list of nearby places to eat, from street stalls to a full Sichuan banquet.

Please read the notes below before you book. They cover entry formalities, pace, weather and what to bring.
Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.
Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.
Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.
Q: How do we book and pay?
A: Send us your travel dates and group size for a same-day quotation. A deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due before arrival, and prices are guaranteed for 7 days.
