Overview

Five days that cover Beijing the way it should be covered: slowly enough to hear it. Arrival day settles you in and opens at the National Museum of China on the east side of Tiananmen Square; day two walks the square and the Forbidden City and ends among the snack streets of Wangfujing. Day three goes to the Mutianyu Great Wall by cable car, the restored section prized for scenery and thinner crowds, and day four pairs the Temple of Heaven's 1420 prayer hall with the lakes and long corridor of the Summer Palace. The final morning rides a rickshaw through the Shichahai hutongs before departure.

Highlights

  • Open at the National Museum of China, whose bronzes and ceramics set up everything you will see afterwards.

  • Walk Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, built between 1406 and 1420 and inscribed by UNESCO in 1987, from the Meridian Gate to the imperial gardens.

  • Ride the cable car at Mutianyu and walk the restored wall between watchtowers - the section praised most for scenery and lighter crowds than Badaling.

  • See the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at the Temple of Heaven, raised in 1420 without a single nail, and inscribed by UNESCO in 1998.

  • Stroll the Summer Palace's Long Corridor beside Kunming Lake, the retreat the court shipped its politics out of each summer.

  • Take a rickshaw through the Shichahai hutongs on the last morning, where courtyard life still runs behind the grey walls.

Day 4Temple of Heaven & Summer Retreat

Morning — the Temple of Heaven
The Temple of Heaven is the largest complex in the world built for the worship of heaven, finished in 1420 and used by the emperors of the Ming and Qing to pray for good harvests. The meaning sits in the shapes: the round halls stand for heaven and the square terraces beneath them for earth, and the whole axis is set out on a strict numerical order. Your guide will take you through the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, a circular timber hall raised without a single nail, and along the Echo Wall, where a whisper at one end carries to the other. Coming in the morning you also see the park at its most local, with groups practising tai chi and calligraphy under the ancient cypresses.

Lunch — near the Temple of Heaven
Dine at a local restaurant near the temple, on Beijing dishes that suit both children and adults.

Afternoon — the Summer Palace
The Summer Palace began as the Qing imperial garden Qingyi Yuan and was rebuilt and expanded by Empress Dowager Cixi as a retreat where she received foreign envoys. Kunming Lake fills about three-quarters of its 2.9 square kilometres, Longevity Hill rises above the water, and the two are joined by the 728-metre Long Corridor that ends at the Marble Boat. You can climb Longevity Hill for sweeping views over the gardens and towards the Fragrant Hills, or stay low and follow the lakeside path past the Seventeen-Arch Bridge; after a full morning, the pace here is deliberately gentle.

Evening — at your leisure
Enjoy a relaxed dinner at your hotel or a nearby restaurant to close the day.

Trip Notes

Frequently asked questions

Why Mutianyu rather than Badaling?

Mutianyu is the restored section with the best scenery-to-crowd ratio: forested ridges, fewer tour groups and a cable car plus toboggan descent. Badaling is grander and busier; travellers who specifically want it can swap the wall day.

How much walking is there each day?

Two to five hours per day on level museum and park ground, with the wall day the most strenuous because of steps and slopes between watchtowers. Pacing is adjustable each morning with the guide.

Does the tour include airport transfers?

Yes. Arrival and departure transfers are included on days one and five, with the National Museum timed to your landing and the rickshaw morning finished in time for your flight or train.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

April to May and September to October give clear skies and mild temperatures. Winter is cold but quiet, summer is hot and green, and the wall is worth walking in any season it is open.
