China's Visa-Free Map in 2026, at a Glance
China now runs four separate visa-free routes into the country, and the rules are not interchangeable. Which one applies depends on your nationality, how you enter, and where you plan to travel once you are inside.
50 countries can enter for up to 30 days under the unilateral visa-free policy — for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges or transit.
57 countries can use 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit through any of 65 open ports, travelling across 24 provincial-level regions — but only if they continue on to a third country or region.
61 countries can enter Hainan Province visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business, medical treatment, conferences or sports — but cannot leave the island under that policy.
Any nationality can use 24-hour transit visa-free at all Chinese open ports, provided they stay inside the port's restricted area.
Those figures come from the National Immigration Administration (NIA), the agency that administers China's exit-entry rules. The most recent expansion was announced on August 20, 2026.
What Changed in 2026 — and What Expires on December 31
February 17, 2026: the United Kingdom and Canada joined the 30-day unilateral visa-free list.
May 20, 2026: China extended Russia's visa-free entry to December 31, 2027.
August 20, 2026: Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were added to both the 240-hour transit scheme, now 57 countries, and Hainan's 30-day scheme, now 61 countries.
November 10, 2025: Sweden was added to the 30-day unilateral list.
The planning date that matters is December 31, 2026. For 48 of the 50 unilateral visa-free countries the policy runs only until 24:00 Beijing time that day; Brunei has no expiry date and Russia runs to the end of 2027. Extensions are announced weeks, not months, in advance — so if your trip sits near New Year 2027, confirm the status before you pay a deposit.
Route 1: 30 Days Visa-Free for 50 Countries
Ordinary passport holders from these 50 countries may enter China without a visa for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges or transit, for up to 30 days:
Europe (35): Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom.
Asia (7): Bahrain, Brunei, Japan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, South Korea.
Oceania (2): Australia, New Zealand.
Americas (6): Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Peru, Uruguay.
Four details matter. The policy applies at all open land, sea and air ports, not just airports. There is no cap on entries and no annual day limit. Independent travellers and tour-group members qualify equally. And the NIA's published FAQ confirms that sports competitions, exhibitions, conferences and study tours or summer camps count as exchange visits when the stay is under 30 days.
How the 30 days are counted: from 00:00 on the day after entry, for 30 calendar days — land on October 1 and you may stay until October 31. The period cannot be extended inside China.
Route 2: 240-Hour Transit — 57 Countries, 65 Ports, 10 Days
This is the most useful option for travellers who already have a second trip booked, and the most misread. Four conditions apply:
You must be travelling through China to a third country or region.
You must hold an onward ticket with a confirmed date and seat departing within 240 hours.
Your nationality must be on the 57-country list.
You must enter through one of 65 designated open ports and stay inside the permitted areas.
The 57 countries are 40 in Europe, including the United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, Belarus and the Balkan states; 9 in Asia — South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan; 6 in the Americas — the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile; plus Australia and New Zealand.
That breakdown matters most for American travellers: the United States is not on the 50-country unilateral list, but it is on the 240-hour transit list and the Hainan list. Those two schemes are the only ways a US passport holder enters China without a visa in 2026.
Where you can travel inside China
Transit travellers are not confined to their arrival city. Cross-province travel is allowed within the permitted areas of 24 provincial-level regions, up from 19 when the current policy took effect on December 17, 2024 — including Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Hainan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Fujian, Hubei, Anhui, Guizhou, Shanxi (Taiyuan and Datong) and Jiangxi (Nanchang and Jingdezhen). That footprint covers the core inbound circuit: the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing, Suzhou's classical gardens and the Bund from Shanghai, the Terracotta Warriors at Xi'an, pandas in Chengdu, the karst scenery of Guilin, and Zhangjiajie, which has its own eligible port at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport.
How the 240 hours are counted
The clock starts at 00:00 on the day after entry, giving 10 calendar days — land on August 1 and you have until August 11. It cannot be extended from inside China, and onward travel must be to a third country or region, not back to where you came from.
Route 3: Hainan's 30-Day Visa-Free Entry (61 Countries)
Hainan operates the most generous regional scheme in the country. Ordinary passport holders from 61 countries may enter through any open port in Hainan and stay anywhere in the province for up to 30 days, for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, conferences or sports. Employment and study are excluded.
Because the island policy stacks on top of the national ones, passport holders from 88 countries can now enter Hainan without a visa. Nine of them can enter only through Hainan: the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Lithuania, Mexico, the Philippines, the United States, Ukraine, Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan.
For those nine nationalities the island is the sole visa-free door into China, and the itinerary has to stay on it. Fly on to Beijing or Shanghai on the same trip and you need a different basis of entry, such as 240-hour transit with an onward ticket to a third country. This is the most common planning error we see from US travellers asking about a visa-free China trip.
Hainan has direct services from many of the visa-free markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom and Australia. In the first half of 2026 the province handled 1.603 million border crossings, up 29.3% year on year, of which 883,000 were foreign nationals.
Route 4: Group and Regional Programs
Three smaller programs are worth knowing. Cruise groups of two or more, organized and received by a China-registered travel agency, may enter visa-free at the cruise ports of 13 cities — Shanghai, Tianjin, Dalian, Qingdao, Lianyungang, Wenzhou, Zhoushan, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beihai, Haikou and Sanya — and stay up to 15 days across 11 coastal provinces and municipalities plus Beijing. ASEAN groups received by a China-registered agency may enter visa-free at Xishuangbanna in Yunnan, or at Guilin in Guangxi, for up to 6 days each. And foreign nationals who first enter Hong Kong or Macao and join a group organized there may enter nine Greater Bay Area cities in Guangdong plus Shantou without a visa.
What Visa-Free Entry Does Not Cover
Work of any kind — a Z visa is required.
Long-term study — enrolment at a Chinese school or university requires a student visa, though a study tour under 30 days counts as an exchange visit.
Journalism — reporting requires a J visa.
Non-ordinary documents — emergency passports and travel permits are excluded, even for nationals of visa-free countries.
Stays beyond 30 days — the visa-free period cannot be extended inside China.
A Practical Arrival Checklist
Passport: an ordinary passport valid for the whole stay; six months of remaining validity is the safe standard.
Proof of purpose: the NIA recommends carrying an invitation letter, hotel bookings and onward tickets that match your stated reason for travel.
Arrival card: the temporary entry card can now be completed online in advance at many ports, including Beijing and Shanghai.
Registration: hotels register foreign guests with the police automatically; in a private home or rental you must register at a police station within 24 hours.

Do US citizens need a visa for China in 2026?
For most trips, yes. The United States is not on the 50-country unilateral visa-free list. The exceptions are 240-hour transit to a third country and a trip that stays entirely within Hainan Province. A multi-city itinerary covering Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai requires a visa.
