Two railways put travelers on the Tibetan plateau. The Qinghai-Tibet line climbs from Xining over the highest railway pass on earth to Lhasa, and the Lhasa-Nyingchi line runs a Fuxing electric train through the Yarlung Tsangpo valley.
Both ask more than a Beijing to Shanghai ticket: a permit arranged weeks ahead, a fixed itinerary, and lungs that tolerate thin air. Times and fares here were checked on 28 October 2026.
Two lines, one plateau
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway runs 1,956 km from Xining to Lhasa. Its halves are uneven: Xining to Golmud is 814 km of ordinary railway, while Golmud to Lhasa covers 1,142 km at an average elevation above 4,000 meters. The line opened in full on 1 July 2006 and tops out at Tanggula Pass, 5,072 meters up.
The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway measures 435.48 km, opened on 25 June 2021, and was the first electrified railway in Tibet. Design speed is 160 km/h, more than 90 percent of the route sits above 3,000 meters, it crosses the Yarlung Tsangpo 16 times, and 75 percent of the line is bridge or tunnel. China Railway reported 6.25 million passengers in its first five years.
The trains and how long they take
| Train | From | Departs | Arrives Lhasa | Journey |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Z8991 | Xining | 22:00 | 18:26 next day | 20h26 |
| Z21 | Beijing West | 19:48 | 11:46 two days later | 39h58 |
| Z164 | Shanghai | 18:33 | 15:36 two days later | 45h03 |
| Z265 | Guangzhou Baiyun | 09:26 | 14:53 two days later | 53h27 |
Z8991 is the one most visitors should take. It leaves Xining after dinner and covers the high plateau in daylight, so Kunlun, Hoh Xil, Tuotuo River, Tanggula and Cona Lake all pass the window while you are awake. The long-distance trains from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou cross that section at night, which is the trade-off for boarding in a city you were already visiting.
Timetables shift with each national timetable change. Confirm the departure on 12306; the pattern holds, the exact minutes do not.
Oxygen, altitude and the stop at Golmud
Plateau trains use sealed 25T carriages with a diffused oxygen supply. On most services the system switches on after Xining or Golmud, and the crew announce it. Every berth has an individual oxygen outlet, so you can top up without leaving your bunk, and passengers sign a health declaration card at boarding.
The climb is staged, which is the point. Xining sits at about 2,200 meters, Golmud at 2,800, Tanggula at 5,072, Lhasa at 3,650. The train stops at Golmud for roughly 20 to 25 minutes, where electric traction ends and a plateau diesel locomotive takes over.
Arriving by rail is gentler than flying in, but not a guarantee. Treat your first afternoon in Lhasa as recovery: no stairs, no alcohol, plenty of water, and the Potala Palace on day two rather than day one.
Berths, food and a day at 4,500 meters
Fares from Xining run about CNY 224 hard seat, 521 hard sleeper, 808 soft sleeper. A hard sleeper is an open bay of six berths, three high; a soft sleeper is a closed four-berth compartment with a door and, on most sets, a power socket inside. The full hierarchy is in our sleeper train guide.
There is no shower, and no Wi-Fi worth relying on. The dining car sells rice and noodle plates for roughly CNY 30 to 40, and hot water is free at the end of each carriage. Toilets come in Western and squat versions with no paper; bring your own, plus wet wipes, lip balm and slippers. Signal drops for long stretches through Hoh Xil, so download what you need before Xining.
Lhasa to Nyingchi: the Fuxing on the plateau
The fastest departure east is C881, leaving Lhasa at 08:10 and reaching Nyingchi at 11:59 in 3 hours 49 minutes: CNY 129 second class, 206 first class, 452 business class. A slower conventional train, K6831, leaves at 16:25 and takes 5 hours 9 minutes, with hard seat at 64.5, hard sleeper at 159.5 and soft sleeper at 245.5. Lhasa to Shannan is as little as 1 hour 2 minutes.
The sets are Fuxing dual-source trains that draw power from the overhead line or run on their own diesel generator, which is why the same equipment continues onto the non-electrified Lhasa-Shigatse line. Carriages are oxygen-equipped and pressurised. Nyingchi sits around 3,000 meters in a forested valley, noticeably warmer than Lhasa, which makes it a sensible first or last stop if you are worried about altitude.
The dedicated tourist train
The plateau also has a packaged version. The first inbound tourist train of 2026 left Xining on 6 March at 20:50 and reached Lhasa at 17:06 the next day after 21 hours 40 minutes, carrying more than 510 passengers in air-conditioned sleeping carriages with oxygen supply. The nine day programme covered more than 20 sites including the Potala Palace, Namcha Barwa and Yamdrok Lake, with a doctor and a professional guide on board.
It is run by the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Railway International Travel Service and sold as a package, not a ticket. Foreign travelers cannot simply buy a berth: entry to Tibet runs through a licensed agency, and the agency must hold your permit before rail tickets are issued. Ask any operator three questions before paying: cabin type, whether the guide works in English, and whether the permit is included.
Permits decide the trip
No foreign passport holder enters the Tibet Autonomous Region independently. You need a Tibet Travel Permit, applied for by a registered Tibet agency, usually 15 to 20 working days ahead, against a fixed itinerary naming your guide and vehicle. Independent travel, self-driving and road entry from Sichuan are closed to foreign visitors.
The permit is checked at the station before boarding and again at checkpoints, and your passport must travel with it. Rail tickets for Lhasa services are effectively tied to the permit, which is why agencies book them for you. The permit lists entry and exit dates, so extending a stay needs a fresh application. Applications have also paused around late February and March in some years; if your dates sit there, confirm before buying anything non-refundable.
What is being built now
The biggest change is under contract. Electrification of the Golmud to Lhasa section was tendered in nine packages worth about CNY 6.59 billion, with construction due to start on 1 November 2026 and run 912 days to around April 2029, under a project budget of CNY 13.75 billion. Thirty-two stations get longer loop tracks, and Amdo, Nagqu and Damxung are rebuilt for EMU stops. Once current reaches Lhasa, trains no longer swap to diesel at Golmud.
Two projects sit behind it. The Lhasa-Nyingchi line is being studied for a second track, 440.9 km at 79.4 percent bridge and tunnel, to match the standard of the Sichuan-Tibet railway now under construction. That line's Ya'an to Nyingchi section runs 1,011 km at 95.8 percent bridge and tunnel, with Chinese project reporting pointing to 2030 completion and through Chengdu to Lhasa service around 2031.
None of this changes a 2026 or 2027 timetable: book the trains that exist.
Fitting the train into an itinerary
The workable shape is two nights in Xining to acclimatise and see Qinghai Lake, the overnight train, three or four nights in Lhasa, then C881 to Nyingchi and a flight out. Add Shigatse or Everest only with extra days and extra permits.
We build this leg into private China itineraries with permit, guide and rail tickets as one package, and into corporate and delegation programmes where the plateau visit sits between Beijing and Shanghai. If this is your first Chinese rail trip, read how the train letters work and the station and boarding walkthrough before you pack.
FAQ
Do I need a permit to take the train to Lhasa? Yes. Foreign passport holders need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged by a licensed agency, checked at the station before boarding.
Is the train better than flying to Lhasa? For acclimatisation, usually yes. The climb is spread over 20 hours instead of two, and you arrive having spent a night above 4,000 meters.
Do the carriages really have oxygen? Yes. Diffused oxygen plus an individual outlet at every berth on the plateau section, and a health declaration card at boarding.
How much does the Xining to Lhasa train cost? About CNY 224 hard seat, 521 hard sleeper, 808 soft sleeper. Lhasa to Nyingchi is 129 in second class on the fast train.
