China's rail network is changing faster in late 2026 than at any point in the past decade, and several of those changes matter directly to international visitors. On 28 September 2026 China opened four new high-speed lines on a single day — the first time that has ever happened — and in the same month a brand-new luxury train built for the international market made its maiden run. Here is what has just launched, what is scheduled to open before April 2027, and how to use it.
Four New High-Speed Lines Opened on One Day
On 28 September 2026 China commissioned four high-speed lines simultaneously for the first time in its history: 1,142 km of new track across four regions. With them in service, the national "8+8" high-speed grid is now 86% complete.
| Line | Route | Length | Top speed | What it changed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing–Hong Kong HSR, Xiong'an–Shangqiu section | Xiong'an to Shangqiu (Hebei, Shandong, Henan) | 552 km | 350 km/h | Xiong'an to Shangqiu in 2h 27m; 16 stations |
| Xi'an–Ankang HSR | Xi'an East to Ankang West (Shaanxi) | 171 km | 350 km/h | Xi'an to Ankang in 45 minutes |
| Yichang–Xingshan HSR | Yichang to Xingshan (Hubei) | 101 km | 350 km/h | Wuhan to Chongqing cut to 3h 54m |
| Harbin–Yichun HSR | Harbin to Yichun (Heilongjiang) | 318 km | 250 km/h | Harbin to Yichun in 1h 46m, down from about 7h |
Two of these change what is practical for visitors. The Xi'an–Ankang line brings the Qinling Mountains and the southern Shaanxi towns of Zhashui, Zhen'an and Ankang onto the national network for the first time, so a two-base Shaanxi trip — Xi'an plus a mountain extension — becomes easy to schedule. The Harbin–Yichun line pushes high-speed rail into the Xiao Hinggan Ling forests, with Yichun West station at 47°43′ N the northernmost high-speed station in China; that opens winter Heilongjiang and the Yichun ski season without a long road transfer.
A New Luxury Train Built for International Travelers
The biggest news of the year for rail-focused visitors is not a high-speed line but a tourist train. Golden Eagle Luxury Trains returned to China in September 2026 after a seven-year absence, launching an entirely new train, the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express. The first China departure ran on 12 September 2026 from Urumqi to Lhasa.
The train carries up to 76 guests across 10 sleeping cars, with two restaurant cars (one Western-style, one Chinese-style), a bar lounge car, an observation car and a storage car. Its design leans on the visual language of the Silk Road: the bar car is entered through a doorway shaped like a Han Dynasty chariot, and the walls of the 270-degree observation car are carved with a map of ancient Chang'an, the eastern terminus of the route and the city we now call Xi'an.
Two cabin categories are sold. The Superior Cabin is about 11 square metres with twin sofas that convert to twin beds or a double, plus an en-suite bathroom. The Han Dynasty Suite is roughly 22 square metres, with a separate living area, a dining table and a bathroom large enough for a bathtub alongside a shower and double sinks.
Five China-focused itineraries are published for 2026 and 2027, including a 13-day Urumqi–Lhasa journey, a 12-day Beijing–Urumqi journey, a 13-day Beijing–Lhasa routing that crosses the Tangula Pass at 5,072 m, and the flagship 22- to 25-day Grand Silk Road from Beijing to Tashkent across six countries. Published 2026 pricing ran from about USD 19,900 per person sharing in a Superior Cabin to USD 49,900 per person sharing in the Han Dynasty Suite on the 13-day China and Tibet itinerary.
Xinjiang's Third-Generation New Oriental Express
Xinjiang Railway also upgraded its flagship tourist train this year. The third-generation New Oriental Express entered service in 2026 with two new train sets, and its first run — train Y933 — left Urumqi on 18 September 2026 on a 12-day north-and-south Xinjiang loop carrying 91 guests, domestic and international.
This is a "land cruise" rather than a train that simply gets you from A to B. The brand runs from April to October on a travel-by-day, ride-by-night rhythm, so you sleep while the train moves and spend daylight hours at scenic stops. Every cabin has a private en-suite bathroom with wet-and-dry separation, panoramic windows, USB-C charging and individual climate control; family connecting rooms are available. Carriages carry six, eight or ten guests depending on class. On board there is a dining car under a stargazing dome roof, a multi-purpose bar and entertainment car, a Silk Road cultural display area, and medical staff travelling with the train.
One practical note: the New Oriental Express is not sold through 12306. Seats are allocated through licensed partner travel operators, and departures assemble in Urumqi rather than at other boarding points.
Silver-Haired Tourist Trains Get an Upgrade
A quieter but genuinely useful development is the accessibility redesign now spreading through provincial tourist trains. Jinan Railway's "Qilu Star" service relaunched on 3 August 2026 as train Y446/7 from Jinan's Daminghu station with more than 650 passengers bound for a 17-day Xinjiang tour.
The changes are concrete: handrails at every doorway and step, carriage thresholds lowered to under 3 cm, lower berths raised to 35 cm with space for a 26-inch suitcase underneath, ladders widened to 80 mm with silicone anti-slip grips, individual reading lights plus USB and power sockets at each berth, and one-touch SOS call buttons linked to the crew. Washrooms were refitted with brighter lighting and thermostatic taps. A second departure, a 10-day Yellow River study journey from Dongying, ran on 19 August 2026 with more than 400 passengers.
If you are travelling with grandparents, or booking a multigenerational family group, these trains are now materially easier to recommend than they were two years ago — see our leisure tours for how we fold them into a full itinerary.
What Opens Next: Now to April 2027
| Line | Route | Expected opening |
|---|---|---|
| Huaibei–Bengbu HSR | Huaibei to Bengbu (Anhui) | October 2026 |
| Huaibei–Fuyang HSR | Huaibei to Fuyang via Suzhou, Bozhou (Anhui) | October 2026 |
| Chaohu–Ma'anshan HSR | Chaohu East to Ma'anshan East (Anhui) | October 2026 |
| Nanning–Zhuhai HSR, Yulin–Cenxi section | Yulin North to Cenxi East (Guangxi) | end of 2026 |
| Jinan–Binzhou HSR | Jinan East to Binzhou (Shandong) | end of 2026 |
| Nanchang–Jiujiang HSR | Nanchang to Jiujiang (Jiangxi) | March 2027 (target) |
| Xiong'an–Xinzhou HSR | Xiong'an to Xinzhou West (Hebei–Shanxi) | March 2027 (target) |
| Chongqing–Wanzhou HSR | Chongqing to Wanzhou | first half of 2027 |
Two of these will show up in itineraries quickly. Jinan–Binzhou includes Yaoqiang Airport station, an underground station with a direct indoor transfer to the terminal, which makes Shandong's northern coast easier to reach without crossing Jinan city centre. Yulin–Cenxi extends high-speed rail across eastern Guangxi, cutting Nanning to Cenxi from roughly five hours to about one.
Further out, the Chengdu–Chongqing middle line is designed to bring those two cities under 50 minutes apart, and the Yibin–Kunming section — targeted for June 2027 — would give Yunnan its first 350 km/h trunk line and roughly three hours from Chengdu to Kunming. All future dates here are construction targets, not confirmed timetables. Treat them as planning signals and confirm with the railway before you commit.
What This Means for Your Itinerary
- Shaanxi just got deeper. Keep Xi'an as a base and let the 45-minute run to Ankang open up the Qinling Mountains.
- Group and corporate travel benefits twice over. Faster Chongqing–Wuhan links help corporate visits schedules, while student groups on study tours can use the new short hops instead of coaches.
FAQ
Can foreign passport holders book these trains? Yes. High-speed tickets on the new lines are sold through 12306 and station counters under the standard passport rules. The luxury tourist trains work differently: Golden Eagle sells internationally through its own channels, and the New Oriental Express is sold only through licensed partner operators, not 12306.
Do the 2027 dates on this list count as confirmed openings? No. They are construction and commissioning targets. Opening dates are set only after static acceptance, integrated testing and a formal safety assessment are complete, so always confirm against 12306 and station notices before booking around them.
Are shore excursions included on the luxury tourist trains? On Golden Eagle's China departures, guided off-train excursions are part of the programme. Check each operator's inclusions carefully, because gratuities, some drinks and optional add-ons are usually charged separately.
Where can I read the network as it stands today? Our China high-speed rail guide for international travelers covers booking, seat classes and the main corridors, and the China Trains hub lists every guide in this series.
