Han Yangling Mausoleum

1.jpg

Han Yangling Mausoleum is the joint tomb of Emperor Jingdi (Liu Qi, 188–141 BCE) of the Western Han Dynasty and his empress, Wang Zhi. More than just an imperial burial site, it serves as an underground "encyclopedia" of Western Han politics, economy, culture, and social life. It bears witness to the glory of the "Rule of Wen and Jing" (a prosperous era initiated by Emperor Jingdi and his father, Emperor Wendi), showcases the essence of Han Dynasty funeral culture, and provides irreplaceable physical evidence for studying ancient Chinese history. Its scientific preservation and presentation also offer valuable insights for modern cultural heritage management.

Emperor Jingdi (reigned 157–141 BCE) and his father, Emperor Wendi, co-founded the renowned "Rule of Wen and Jing," characterized by reduced taxes and policies that prioritized rest and recovery for the people. Though less grandiose than Emperor Wu’s Maoling, Han Yangling’s meticulous layout and modest yet abundant grave goods reflect the frugal governance ideals of Emperor Jingdi’s era, making it a crucial reference for studying early Western Han socioeconomic development.
