Overview

The West Sea Canyon is the wildest ground on Huangshan: a stairway cut into the cliff that drops into a granite gorge, follows its floor and climbs out on the far side. It is also the part most day visitors skip, because it costs hours. This tour buys those hours by taking the Yungu cable car up instead of walking.

The route runs Beihai, Paiyun Pavilion, down into the canyon and out, then the Flying-over Rock, Bright Summit at 1,860 metres, and finally down past the Guest-Greeting Pine to the Yuping cable car. Expect a long day on stairs with real exposure on the canyon section. Your guide carries the group's pace, and the canyon tram can be used for part of the climb out depending on conditions. Good boots, a windproof layer and a head for heights are assumed.

Itinerary

Day 1Huangshan Hiking Day: Bright Summit and the West Sea Canyon

Morning — Cable car to Beihai
The scenic shuttle takes you to the Yungu lower station and the cable car lifts you most of the way up in a few minutes, which buys the day the hours it needs for the canyon. From White Goose Ridge you walk the Beihai plateau: Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Clear Cool Terrace for the view north, and Paiyun Pavilion, the balcony over the West Sea where the cloud collects below the path on most damp mornings.

Lunch
A set meal at a restaurant on the mountain.

Afternoon — Down into the West Sea Canyon
The West Sea Canyon is the wildest ground on Huangshan: a stairway cut into the cliff that drops into a granite gorge, runs along its floor, and climbs out again on the far side - several hours of stair walking, and the reason this is a day for people who enjoy using their legs. When the light comes in low the canyon walls hold it, and the rock stacks up in thin vertical fins on both sides. Your guide sets the pace and, where the route allows, will take the canyon tram for part of the climb out; the choice is made on the day with the weather and the group in mind.

Late afternoon — Bright Summit and down
Out of the canyon you pass the Flying-over Rock and climb to Bright Summit at 1,860 metres, then descend towards Yuping for the Guest-Greeting Pine - the pine that grows out of the rock above Yuping and has been the mountain's emblem for as long as people have been coming up here - before taking the Yuping cable car down to the shuttle.

Evening — Return
Shuttle to the transfer terminal and private vehicle to Huangshan city (Tunxi).
