A private walking tour that goes up through the layers of Central. It starts at the bottom of the covered escalator system — close to a kilometre of linked flights that carries commuters downhill in the morning and back up from late morning — and passes a street market that has been trading there for generations. Tai Kwun, the old Central Police Station compound of courthouses, barracks and prison built from the 1860s, is now a public heritage and arts centre with its granite walls and prison yards intact.
Above it, PMQ is a 1950s police married quarters block turned over to local designers, and the way back down runs past the Hollywood Road antiques shops, Man Mo Temple with its coils of incense, St John's Cathedral and the colonial buildings around Battery Path. Lunch is included. There is no vehicle on this tour: it is a few hours on foot, with steps at the temple and the escalator doing the climbing.
Morning — Graham Street and the escalator
You start at street level in Central, where the covered escalator system that links the business district to the Mid-Levels begins. It runs for the better part of a kilometre in linked flights and is used as ordinary public transport: downhill towards the harbour in the morning for commuters, then reversed to carry people back up the hill from late morning. Walking beside it, you pass one of the oldest surviving street markets in the city — wet-fish stalls, poultry, vegetables, fruit — still trading in the shadow of the office towers.
Cultural Insight
The escalator was built to take pressure off the steep roads of the Mid-Levels, but it changed the streets it passes through: the sections it serves filled with bars, restaurants and small shops, and they have been the most expensive real estate on the hill ever since.
Late morning — Tai Kwun
Tai Kwun is the old Central Police Station compound: the police barracks, the magistrates' courts and the prison, built from the 1860s onwards on a terrace above Hollywood Road. Closed for years and restored with the prison yards, the granite walls and the ironwork kept intact, it now works as a public heritage and arts centre with galleries, courtyards and places to sit. Admission to the compound is free.

Lunch at a cha chaan teng or a small noodle house in the lanes off Hollywood Road.
Afternoon — PMQ and the colonial buildings
PMQ is the former Police Married Quarters on Hollywood Road, put up in the 1950s for junior officers and their families and now a block of studios and shops for local designers — ceramics, jewellery, print, clothing — which you can walk into and watch being made. From there the walk drops back towards the harbour past the antiques and furniture shops of Hollywood Road, the Man Mo Temple with its coils of hanging incense, and the small group of colonial-era buildings around Battery Path, including St John's Cathedral, the oldest Anglican church in the city, and the former French Mission building that now houses the Court of Final Appeal.
