Overview

The Dragon's Back is the ridge that runs along the south-east shoulder of Hong Kong Island, named for the shape of its skyline, and it is the walk people mean when they say Hong Kong has more to it than towers. The climb up from the trailhead takes well under an hour; the ridge itself is a few kilometres of undulating path with the sea on both sides — Big Wave Bay and Shek O to the east, Tai Tam and Stanley to the west — ending with a drop to the beach at Big Wave Bay.

Allow roughly two to three hours on the ridge at an easy pace. The ground is uneven in places and much of the route is unshaded, so a hat, water and closed shoes matter more than hiking boots; the walk is not technical but it is not a pavement either. Lunch and the transfers to and from the trailhead are included. If you would rather walk somewhere flatter, the same slot can be run as a Sai Kung coastal walk or a circuit of the Shing Mun Reservoir — say which when you book.

Itinerary

Day 1Hong Kong: the Dragon's Back Ridge to Big Wave Bay

Morning — Onto the ridge
A short drive east takes you to the trailhead on Shek O Road, where the path starts climbing through scrub to the Dragon's Back — the ridge that runs along the south-east shoulder of Hong Kong Island and is named for the shape of its skyline. The climb to the crest is the only sustained uphill of the day and takes well under an hour.

Cultural Insight
Most of Hong Kong Island outside the built-up north shore is protected country park, and the ridge sits inside Shek O Country Park — one of the reasons a city of seven million people has serious walking within an hour of its centre.

Late morning — Along the crest
The ridge walk itself is a few kilometres of undulating, mostly clear path with the sea on both sides: Big Wave Bay and Shek O to the east, Tai Tam and Stanley to the west, and the outlying islands away to the south. The high point is a little under 300 metres. Allow roughly two to three hours at an easy pace, with stops — the ground is uneven in places and there is little shade, so a hat and water matter more than walking boots.

Lunch — Near Shek O
A simple lunch after the walk, or a packed lunch carried from the city if you would rather eat on the beach.

Afternoon — Big Wave Bay
The path drops off the ridge to Big Wave Bay, a small bay with a surfable beach and a village behind it. There is time to swim or sit, and time to look at the prehistoric rock carving on the headland above the beach — spirals and geometric patterns cut into the stone, of uncertain date and only partly legible now. Your vehicle meets you here for the drive back.
