Overview

A short private tour built on the two rides that have carried Hong Kongers for well over a century. The Peak Tram has been climbing the hill out of Central since 1888 on gradients steep enough that the buildings look tilted; at the top, the Lugard Road path gives the harbour view from above. Coming back down, you cross to Kowloon on the Star Ferry, which costs a few Hong Kong dollars and takes under a quarter of an hour.

The tour runs about four hours, morning or afternoon, and includes hotel pick-up and drop-off. No meals are included — it is designed to sit alongside a lunch or dinner of your own. Admission to the Peak Tram, the Sky Terrace viewing platform and the ferry are all in the price; Madam Tussauds at the Peak Tower is not.

Itinerary

Day 1Hong Kong: Peak Tram, Victoria Peak and the Star Ferry

Morning — The Peak Tram
The Peak Tram is a funicular that has been climbing out of Central since 1888, on a line of roughly a kilometre and a half that gains close to 400 metres of height, with gradients steep enough that the buildings along the way appear to lean. The lower terminus is a short walk from the government offices in Central. Your guide takes you up, then out to the viewing terraces at the top.

Cultural Insight
The Peak was settled as a summer retreat because it is measurably cooler than the city below, and for most of its early history it was reserved by ordinance for senior officials and the wealthiest residents. The tram's earliest fares were sold in classes, with separate carriages for the different ranks.

Late morning — The Lugard Road lookout
A short, mostly level path runs around the shoulder of the Peak and opens onto the view that defines Hong Kong: the harbour, Kowloon across the water, and the outlying islands behind it. You walk as far as the group wants — it is easy ground, and the section to the first lookout takes only a few minutes. Madam Tussauds sits beside the Peak Tower if you would like to go in; admission there is at your own expense.

Midday — The Star Ferry
Back down in Central you board the Star Ferry for the crossing to Tsim Sha Tsui. The ferries have been running since the 1880s, the trip takes well under a quarter of an hour, and the fare is a few Hong Kong dollars — still one of the cheapest serious sightseeing rides anywhere. From the upper deck you get the skyline from the water, which is the photograph everyone takes.

Early afternoon — The Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront
A short walk along the Kowloon waterfront to the Clock Tower, built in the 1910s and all that survives of the old railway terminus, before your vehicle takes you back to the hotel.
