What’s the best way to get around China?

China offers an excellent range of transport options:

  • High-speed trains (CRH): Fast, efficient, and affordable for medium-to-long distances.

  • Domestic flights: Best for long distances like Beijing to Urumqi or Guangzhou to Lhasa.

  • Subways: Very convenient in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu.

  • Buses & Taxis: Budget-friendly but language barriers can occur.

  • Didi (Chinese Uber): Easy to use with a translation app.

Example:

Traveling from Beijing to Shanghai (1,300 km) takes just 4.5 hours by high-speed train (~$80–120 USD) vs. a 2-hour flight (plus airport time). Both are excellent options.
